Freshwater Lake Swimming
Swimming in Finland’s freshwater lakes is one of the simplest and most refreshing ways to experience summer in Lapland. While the region is known for its cool climate, summer days—especially in July and August—can be surprisingly warm, and the lakes often heat up enough for comfortable swimming. Earlier in the season or towards autumn, however, lake swimming is typically more invigorating and closer to a cold-water experience, loved and practiced by many.
In Levi, there are several well-maintained public beaches where you can enjoy a swim. Levi Swimming Beach and Kätkänranta Beach by Immeljärvi Lake are both offer sandy lakeshores and are equipped with basic facilities such as changing cabins during the summer and autumn months, making them easy and accessible options for visitors. At Kätkänranta Beach , Saunabaari also offers refreshing drinks and food througout the summer and autumn month, making it a very popular and vibrant spot.
Outside Levi there are many other beaches. Those in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park have exceptionally beautiful views to the Fells, such as the red sand beach, called Punainenhiekka , in Pallasjärvi lake.
Finland’s Everyman’s Right (jokamiehenoikeus) allows everyone to enjoy nature freely, including swimming in lakes and waterways, regardless of land ownership. This means you are generally free to access natural shorelines and take a dip. However, it’s important to be respectful: avoid entering private yards, do not use private piers without permission, and always respect people’s privacy and the surrounding environment.
Whether you’re taking a refreshing midday swim or enjoying a peaceful evening dip under the midnight sun, lake swimming is a truly memorable part of a Finnish summer.
