The difference between a taxi and a private transfer is certainty, not price. A taxi is whatever's at the rank when you land — local cooperative, meter-priced, no booking, around €50–€80 airport-to-village depending on time and bags. Fine in summer; occasionally a 30-minute queue at Kittilä after a busy winter flight. A private transfer is somebody specifically waiting for you — booked in advance, flight tracked, name on a sign at arrivals, child seats fitted, fixed price up front.

Private transfers are worth the upgrade for late arrivals with tired children, groups of five-plus, or anyone who'd rather not stand outside in −25°C looking for a rank. They operate year-round at similar pricing across seasons. Local taxi cooperatives also run within the village for short hops (€10–€15) and to outlying accommodation that the ski bus doesn't serve.
